Runs, but no heat
Usually a thermal fuse, a heating element or one leg of the 240-volt circuit on an electric dryer, or the igniter on a gas dryer.
Will not start
Check both breakers first. After that, the door switch, thermal fuse and start switch cause most no-start calls.
Motor hums, drum sits still
The drive belt has usually snapped or slipped off the idler pulley. It is one of the quickest repairs we do.
Squealing, thumping or grinding
Worn drum rollers, a dry idler pulley or a rear bearing. The noise gets worse over time and can take the belt with it.
Stops in the middle of a load

Why does my dryer shut off in the middle of a cycle in winter?
Most winter shutoffs come from the outside vent, not the dryer. Moist exhaust freezes on the vent flap or snow buries the vent hood, the air backs up, and the high-limit thermostat cuts the heat or the motor. Clear the outside vent first. If it keeps happening with a clear vent, the thermostat or thermal fuse needs testing.
Can a power outage or storm damage my dryer?
Yes. After the August 2020 derecho many homes in town were without power for about five days, and the surge when power comes back can damage a control board or a door switch circuit. If your dryer will not start after an outage, reset both breakers first, then have the board tested before anyone orders parts.

Is it worth fixing a dryer that is 10 or 12 years old?
Usually, yes. A belt, thermal fuse, rollers or igniter costs a fraction of a new dryer, which runs about $600 to $1,200. We use a simple rule: if the repair is under half the price of a comparable new dryer and the drum and motor are sound, fix it. If the motor or main control board fails on an older machine, we will tell you that a replacement may be the better buy.
Gas and electric dryers
About three out of four Cedar Rapids homes heat with natural gas, according to the Census, so many laundry rooms here have a gas line and a gas dryer. We repair both.
Electric dryers
An electric dryer needs both 120-volt legs of its 240-volt circuit to make heat. The motor only needs one. When one leg drops, the drum keeps turning but the air stays cold. We check the breaker and the outlet first, then test the thermal fuse, the thermostats and the heating element with a meter.
Gas dryers

How fast can you get to my house?
Calls placed before noon usually get a same-day visit, Monday through Saturday. Calls after noon are normally booked for the next morning. Marion and Hiawatha are on the same schedule as Cedar Rapids.
What should I check before I call?
Check that both dryer breakers are on (an electric dryer uses a double breaker), the door closes firmly, the lint screen is clean and the outside vent flap opens when the dryer runs. On a gas dryer, make sure the gas shutoff valve behind the machine is open. If all of that looks fine, call us.
My dryer smells like something is burning. Is it safe to use?
Stop the dryer and unplug it. A burning smell usually means lint has built up near the heater or burner, or a belt or motor is overheating. Lint near a heat source is a fire risk, so do not run it again until the vent and the inside of the cabinet have been checked. If you smell gas instead, leave the house and call Alliant Energy at 1-800-255-4268.
How often should the dryer vent be cleaned?
Once a year for most homes. Clean it every six months if the vent run is long, the laundry is in a basement, or you dry a lot of loads for a big family. Our vent cleaning guide explains the warning signs.
Can you clean the dryer vent on the same visit as a repair?
Yes. When a blocked vent caused the problem, we clean it while we are there so the new part is not damaged by the same airflow issue. A standalone vent cleaning usually costs $80 to $150.
What does the 90-day warranty cover?
OEM parts we install and our labor on that repair. If an OEM part we installed fails within 90 days, we come back and fix it at no charge. Aftermarket parts are not covered by the warranty.
Do you work weekends?
We work Saturdays from 8 AM to 6 PM, the same hours as weekdays. We are closed on Sunday.
